Why They Can’t Catch Faeries

I’ll admit, the idea for this one came from @The-Princess-Marie and her image as a thank you for 2100 watchers.  So, Carlie, this is all Marie’s fault.

Carlie let herself into the hall, her wings fluttering a little as she set herself down.  Carlie was a young faerie, only a century old, and still didn’t know everything about her kind.

The news had come that Marie, one of her mentors, had possibly been caught by a human.  She didn’t really understand the fear that humans had over their kind, but it went back for centuries.  Still, Marie was one of these that tried to teach her their ways.

But Marie fluttered into the hall like normal, just as she had for as long as Carlie could remember. It was such a relief, knowing this. But then Marie started to talk. “My fellow faeries, it is true.  Last night I was almost caught by a human, but one little feature of faeriekind kept me from harm.  It’s also the reason nobody can have any evidence of us, even parts of us.  No evidence can ever exist because of something that is not often discussed.”

Marie sat. “It’s never comfortable, but we are magical creatures, after all.  This means all kinds of magic can happen with us.  For example….”

Marie grimaced a little as she grabbed hold of her foot and pulled.  It came off cleanly, almost like it was cut with a sharp blade.  She looked at it a moment as it began twitching and moving, fully able to be controlled by her, before she put it back on her leg.  She gasped a little before showing it was really reattached.

As she stood, she began to talk. “Here’s the whole of it.  We can detach any parts of our bodies, although it’s uncomfortable, so long as our hearts remain intact.  The thing is that our hearts will usually find their way back home on their own, but the important part is that the parts we detach will disappear from wherever they end up in about 12 hours and be regrown as new if we’re not there to reattach them….”

Carlie’s mind whirled at the thought.  Detaching a part of herself?  It seemed so bizarre, so weird.  But she saw Marie do it, which meant she could do it to herself.  And she thought it might be fun.  But then, Carlie was always thought of as a strange one.

So, it was possible to detach herself?  She got to her quarters, smiling, as she thought of the possibilities.  What could she do if she could be in pieces?  She smiled big as she tried to think of what she could do first.

She reached over to her arm, just wanting to test it.  She smiled a little as she pulled on her arm.

Pain bloomed as she gasped. She breathed deep and fast, trying to manage the pain, before she pulled again and felt her arm come off.

It felt so odd.  She could still feel her arm, but she knew it wasn’t on her anymore.  She clenched her fist, even though it wasn’t attached, giggling a little as she saw it move. After a moment, she pushed it back on, feeling a little bit of a thrill as it reattached.

She sat, knowing what she wanted to do next.  She saw Marie do it, so she knew she could do it too.  She gasped a little as she pulled her feet off, first one, then the other. How much more could she do like this? She had to know.

She reached up, pulling on her head a little as it came off cleanly.  She gasped, feeling the pain like before, but knew she had done it.  She’d pulled her head off.

She sat her head down where she could watch the rest of her.  This was so odd, a little uncomfortable, and there was pain as she came apart, but how much further could she go?

She smiled a little as she realized what she wanted to do next.  During one of her times spying on the humans, she’d seen one of their Veltizion shows where two human women were sawn in half and their bottom halves switched.

She smiled, knowing she wanted to try it.  Sure, she was in pieces already, but she had to try it.  She had to.

She put her hands on her hips, pushing down.  It took a little extra effort and the pain was more intense, but, after a few moments, her top half came away from her bottom half cleanly.  She laughed, giggling as she realized what this meant.

But then she thought of something serious as she went to sleep while in pieces.  It did feel odd, but fun, as she went to sleep, but what if it didn’t work?  What if she didn’t come back together.

The next day, she woke up, feeling her whole body back in one piece.  She knew it had worked but wasn’t sure if it would keep working. Marie did say that the magic was limited by the nectar faeries drank.  The nectar was nasty, but it did feel good after a while.  It allowed faeries to produce the dust that was left behind, even though it only lasted a few minutes when they left.

So, was there a limit? Although Carlie did have fun, she knew she had to pace herself.  She drank a little extra nectar, knowing that she didn’t want to be caught unawares.

But it didn’t mean she wouldn’t try in a few months.
