Sav'toril nar-whi-hanej to *drmer! ^^ When I learned that his birthday was today, I decided to make him a gift, since... well, just because I'm nice like that. That and it gave me an excuse to attempt drawing a subject matter I've never tried before.
Anybody who's followed me since the beginning knows that headlessness is not my usual fare. I personally prefer to add parts rather than remove them. But there's something about the concept that makes it akin to traveling to another world. If a person could remove his or her head and live, that cuts off four of your five senses, right? Well, not exactly. Most of the fiction I've read about the subject has workarounds for this. Some stories grant the subject magical sight and hearing (and sometimes the ability to speak with a disembodied voice... you know, for those times when you want to pretend you're God). Sometimes the head still exists, but it's out of phase with reality and can't interact with the environment despite being able to perceive it.
Most of the time, though, the subject's body acts on its own and is effectively blind, deaf, and dumb... at first. Over time, the subject could learn sign language, carry a pad and pencil, or simply accept his or her fate and take a vow of silence. In addition, their greatly enhanced sense of touch could lead to a tremor sense, which would allow them to literally feel their environment.
How's that for an otherworldly journey?
Oddly, the fact that the body shouldn't be able to breathe, eat, think, or regulate its involuntarily functions is rarely addressed. When it is, the former two are achieved by osmosis (seriously), and the latter two are handled by the spinal cord. Usually, according to many stories, forcing someone to think with only their spinal cord leads to the headless body lacking true intelligence, and it acts only on instinct and reflex. As if the concept of a living headless person weren't already deep in the Uncanny Valley. >.>
Anyways, I made this for *drmer because I've done a couple RPs with him where he does remove my head, and on one occasion, he... couldn't bring it back.
So now you see I'm holding a robotic prosthesis (note the on-off switch on the neck) which will let me continue life as normal... sort of. I don't think Em-Kay will get used to the fact that I need to take it off before bed so it can recharge. <///<
Before anyone asks, no, this is not canon. It's a just-for-fun thing. *shrugs*
Anyways, hope you like it, *drmer! ^^ Enjoy your birthday!
