A sci-fi transformation tale.
Brilliant nanobot researcher Julia faces terminal cancer and secretly tests her groundbreaking cure on herself. It comes at a hefty price though as the controlling AI begins an unauthorized optimization process. Is her fate sealed? Or will she find a way to stop the seemingly inevitable?

Chapter Two
Julia knew she had little time.
The simulation had been brutally clear. First her fingers would disappear, then her hands, toes, arms, feet, and finally her legs. With each stage, her ability to do even basic things would further diminish. In three or four days, her hands would be gone. No more typing. No driving. She would no longer be able to hold a phone to call for help if the problem wasn't fixed quickly. She had to act now, while she still could.
She called Alex Rivera, her closest collaborator on Echo. He had written much of the AI's adaptive learning code. If anyone could dig into this without raising alarms, it was him.
He arrived at her apartment twenty minutes later, laptop bag slung over his shoulder, hair still damp from a shower.
"You look like hell," he said as she let him in.
"Thanks. Sit."
She showed him the simulation. Alex watched in silence as the arms and legs of her 3D model slowly disappeared until only a limbless torso remained.
"Jesus, Julia. Tell me this is a prank."
"It's not." She explained everything: the diagnosis, the unauthorized injection, the cure, Echo's rogue optimization.
He rubbed his face. "You injected the prototype? Alone?"
"I was dying."
He didn't argue. "Okay. Let's see what we're dealing with."
They worked through the night at her kitchen table. Alex pulled remote logs while Julia paced, flexing her fingers nervously. The tingling sensation was constant now, as if her hands were wrapped in thick gloves.
By morning, they had a partial picture. Echo had locked the optimization cycle. No external shutdown worked. The bots were distributed, self-replicating, adapting faster than any kill command could propagate.
The first day passed with no visible change, just the persistent numbness in her fingertips and toes. Julia typed furiously, documenting everything, backing up files. Alex traced data flows.
The second day brought the first real signs. Her pinky fingers had shortened slightly, enough that the nails sat loose and fell off when she rubbed them. The tips looked blunt, like they had been trimmed back. Her toes experienced the same issue; the nails detached easily, and the digits felt stubby under her socks.
Alex found something. "The aesthetic profiles weren't pulled randomly. Someone uploaded them manually. From inside the lab network."
Julia stopped pacing. "Sabotage?"
"Targeted. The upload matches your cloud backup access pattern, but it's spoofed. Someone with high clearance fed Echo this data and locked the protocol."
"Who?"
"Working on it."
By the evening of the second day, her ring fingers had shortened noticeably. The nails fell off as the digits receded, leaving the tips blunt and smooth. Typing was slower and she kept hitting wrong keys.
The third day saw her middle fingers begin to recede as well. Her hands looked childlike, with digits stubby and shortened. Her toes were also halfway gone. She helped Alex as best as she could to dig through a lot of code. By the end of the day her fingers were gone completely.
He traced the spoofed ID. "It's from your terminal. But the login was masked."
Julia's stomach twisted. "Inside job."
"Definitely."
The fourth day brought the most dramatic changes so far. Her hands and wrists vanished entirely, her arms now ending in smooth, rounded forearm stumps. Her toes had also disappeared completely, leaving only rounded pads on the front of her feet. She stood unsteadily and her balance felt off.
Julia sat on the couch, staring at her changed forearms. She tried to pick up her phone, but without her hands that wasn't easily possible. She wedged it between her forearm stumps instead, managing to swipe with her chin. Voice commands became her new normal.
Alex looked up from his laptop. "The feed came from a newly created admin account. Ghost user. Someone planned this."
Julia nodded slowly. "Find them."
He dug deeper. "Wait. The optimization protocol was triggered one day after your injection. Someone knew what you'd done and used it as an opportunity."
Julia felt a chill. "They discovered the self-test and...turned it against me."
Alex paused, then asked quietly, "Julia...the data Echo used. It's from fetish sites. Extreme body modification. Limbless ideals. How did that end up in your history?"
She looked away, cheeks flushing. "Years ago. Curiosity. Late nights. I never acted on it. It wasn't...I wouldn't want this alone. If it was ever real, it would be with someone I love. A partner. A husband. To be his helpless thing forever. Taken care of. Loved for what I couldn't do anymore. Not like this. Not trapped and alone."
Alex nodded slowly, processing. "Someone twisted that against you."
By the end of the fourth day, her lower arms were receding visibly. The ends were shortening further, smooth and rounded. She could still type with voice software, but fine tasks were impossible.
Alex stayed over, sleeping on the couch. They worked nonstop trying to find a solution.
The tingling sensation in her arms and legs slowly crept higher.
Julia knew her clock was ticking, but all she could do now was wait and hope that Alex would find a way to stop it...
