Seriously?! B-but it’s Christmas! Your boss can’t seriously expect you to go in now!” It’s after dinner and Effie has laid out the bad news. I’m practically whining as I sit down on Effie’s bed while she puts together a small travel bag.

“I know! I want to spend time with you and my family, but you know this job is an amazing opportunity. After we’re done with college, I basically have myself set up for a dream position especially if I take the lead on this project! All of their full-time workers are on paid vacation, so only a handful of people can take the call and well…” Effie sits down next to me, with a despondent look on her face. Her soft brown eyes are close to watering. “I know it’s unexpected, but I think it’s good for you to get to know my family better. I really like you and want them to as well. Just…promise me you’ll be nice to everyone…including Emma…and I’ll do whatever you want when I head to your place after New Years!”

I perk up and my eyes grow wide as does Effie’s grin. “Anything?” I grin back as I lean towards her.

Anything. We could even play with any toys you have hidden away. Like, maybe you’ll finally show what’s in that big box of yours hiding in the closet…She leans forward to kiss me as I grow visibly uncomfortable. I can tell she notices this shift. “Oh don’t worry, I haven’t snuck around or anything! It’s just…noticeable when you have something in the back of your room labeled ‘PRIVATE’! You may as well write ‘NO GIRLS ALLOWED’ on it. I promise I haven’t looked!”

She giggles at her own joke while I feign laughter, nervous at how close to the mark she is. I kiss her back while I internally scramble to regain my confidence. “H-ha! Yeah…totally! Oh, hey!” I notice something out of the corner of my eye. “If you’re not going to be here for Christmas…you should take your gifts with you!”

To help hide the redness on my face, I quickly move to inspect some packages I see in the corner of her room. I find several with my name on them, so I sit down and begin shuffling them around to find the right gifts for Effie. Mother must have gathered all the incoming boxes addressed to us here, so I don’t want to open them in front of Effie. Both to maintain the surprise and to keep my secret gifts hidden.

My back is turned, so I’m surprised when I feel Effie’s arms wrap around me. I can feel her pressing against my back, her chest warm and soft. Her lips press against my neck and my heart races. Now I’m glowing red for all the right reasons. “Hey…I thought we weren’t supposed to fool around…”

“Mmm. I know…but I feel so bad leaving you to fend for yourself. I want you to know I’m going to make this up for you…so…hard…” I feel her hands moving down my chest, reaching for something. I lick my lips and smile while I kiss her back, hands grasping for more packages.

*Creak*

“Hey, mom says to hurry it up. There’s a weather report coming in about a sudden snow storm and- EWW!” We are both jolted by Emma’s surprise appearance. We turn around, my arms full of boxes and Effie pulling her hands to herself. We all have a look of bemusement on our faces. “Ugh, whatever. Mom wants you on the road sooner than later before any ice forms. We’ll keep an eye on your dweeb. But if he can’t keep his hands to himself, we’ll pull out the old crib in his room.”

The goth sister sticks her tongue out at me before exiting the room, leaving us short of breath and too unnerved to continue. “Ooh, she’s right, I should get going! I just need to grab a few more things. I’m sorry I can’t leave you my car, but everyone is pretty particular about what they drive so….”

“It’s totally fine! I get it. This job is important to you and the opportunity is too good to pass up. I can deal. It’s ok!” Effie smiles wide before planting another kiss on my lips. “Thanks babe. Do you think I could use some wrapping paper to get your gifts ready before you leave? I can be quick!”

“Aww, that’s so sweet! Head down to the drawing room, mom should have the gift wrapping supplies set up in there.” I nod and gather up everything I can, with some difficulty. It looks like everything should have arrived, from my gifts for the family and Effie, plus my own ‘special’ presents.

Hurrying along, I make my way downstairs. It’s well after dinner and I can hear the clink and clatter of dishware along with running water from the kitchen. I tried to volunteer to wash the dishes but before I could, Effie had pulled me away to talk about leaving. I could tell that this annoyed Emma, who gave me a disdained look even as Effie dragged me upstairs. I’d have to make sure I volunteered the next couple of times to make a better impression…it would also be a nice way to get away from everyone.

As I make my way through the house, I find more evidence of how loaded their family must be. The carpets are plush, the hardwoods are shiny, and there’s artwork and gilded photo frames throughout the house. “They most definitely have a maid cleaning this place…” I think to myself.

After rounding a few corners, I finally found the correct room. Several rolls of wrapping papers are laid out along with scissors, bows, ribbons, and an assortment of other supplies through the entryway. I quickly walk into the room to hurry with the wrapping, turning the corner…and tumble forward!

The packages all clatter as they fall onto the ground, along with myself. I shake my head and open my eyes, to find myself close to the ground. Luckily, I’ve caught myself by launching my arms forward. Unfortunately, I open my eyes and find myself right on top of Mother.

“I-I-I-” I stutter as I stare down at her, all while she keeps her cool and raises an eyebrow at me. Looking down I can see she’s in an emerald nightgown, lace and silk hugging her body. Even in a silk bonnet, she is the picture of pristine. Realizing what’s happened, I try to gather myself. “I- I’m so sorry m- Mother- Umm, here let me help you up!”

I push myself up, accidentally brushing my hand against Mother’s side, hoping that I didn’t touch anything I wasn’t supposed to. Holding my hand out, she allows me to pull her up. Her grip is soft but firm, while her gaze is cold. “I fucked up…” I whine to myself in my head.

“I’m really, really sorry! I should have looked before turning- I was trying to get these gifts wrapped for Effie a-and-” I move as though I’m trying to brush dust off her, but then catch myself before moving instead to pick up my packages. They seem to have scattered throughout the room.

“It’s quite alright, young man. You just startled me is all. No harm, no foul. Although I’d appreciate it if you watched where you were going next time. The last time a man was anywhere close to that same position…well…” She smirks and nods towards a wall. Looking over, I can see a shelf with an urn on it. “My last husband. Poor thing was lost in a corn maze and wasn’t found for several days. I miss him so. To think that the last time we spoke was over a costume contest he didn’t want to enter…pity. He didn’t like the costume I chose for him, but alas. It was quite…pretty.”

I gulp as Mother speaks so solemnly yet so brazenly about her dead husband. She is so incredibly attractive in her nightgown yet so frightening. “O-oh, I’m sorry to hear about him…umm, I imagine you miss him a lot? I haven’t lost anyone yet but I imagine it’s hard…” I’m almost shocked as she turns to me, a softer look in her eyes that reminds me of Effie.

Hmph. You’re sweet. I’m starting to see what Effie sees in you.” She walks over to me, staring up at me being a whole head shorter. Even so, I feel frozen as she places her hand on my cheek. “You know. You remind me of my last husband. You even have similar hair, quite long. I used to style it for him. You’ll need to let me try something out on you. The girls haven’t let me cut their hair in such a long time.”

I gulp and nod. “Y-yes ma’am, of course!” Even with her being so scary, I jump on the opportunity to please her. “Anything for you!”

This indeed seems to placate her, earning a small smile. She turns away and I sigh in relief. Once again I catch a glimpse of her from behind before she speaks again. “So what are you doing down here? Isn’t Effie about to leave?”

“Yeah, she is! Umm, I was hoping to wrap her gifts before she leaves. That way she can still unwrap them on Christmas!” She turns to me, her smile wider than before.

“An excellent idea! Come here. I’m actually quite good at this, being a mother and housewife for so long.” She walks over to me and grabs several of my boxes. Placing them on the table, I watch as she unleashes a whirlwind of wrapping paper, scissors, tape, perfect creases, and even tying large, gorgeous bows. Within the span of a few minutes, she wrapped all the boxes I had in my hands. They look like they’re meant for a store Christmas display!

“And here you go. Hurry along and pass them to my daughter, I’ll do the same and place her other gifts in her car.” I nod excitedly, happy to have finally made a good impression on Mother. Walking out of the room, I can feel my foot knocking against something else. “Oh don't worry, some other boxes may have gotten knocked over in your tumble. I was working on my own wrapping. I’ll clean those up.”

“Thank you Mother!” I rush out of the room, giddy before she calls out.

“Remember. No running young lad- I mean young man.” I respond affirmatively, keeping my pace slower. I giggle thinking that she must be used to only having girls around the house. Looking down at my wonderfully wrapped treasure trove, I do notice something is off.

Counting the boxes, I swear I had more in my hands, but in the hurry to get downstairs I may have had them jumbled together. Now they were not only perfectly wrapped but in a neat pile. Climbing the stairs, I realize there are no tags on the boxes…

Crap. I need to figure out which box is supposed to be for Effie now…Mother moved so fast I didn’t even think about asking for tags…” As I’m contemplating my mistake, I round the corner and…once again tumble.

I catch myself again but this time looking down, I find myself inches away from Emma and Eve. Emma is wearing black sweats and a black crop top. I can also see a hint of pink under her shirt, as well as red on her face. Eve is wearing a nightgown similar to her mother, in every sense as it hugs her body as well.

“Get off dweeb! Watch where you’re going!” I hurry to get up and offer Emma my hand, which she knocks away. Eve scoffs and gets herself up quickly but serenely.

“Sorry!” I yelp before crouching down to gather my presents. Unfortunately, I also see that Emma and Eve must have been carrying their own wrapped presents.

“Ugh, look what you did! I had everything organized but with no tags left- Urghhh.” We all work to sort through the mess of gifts, trying to grab what we thought was ours.

“You need to watch where you’re going!” Eve reprimands me, although not with quite the same ferocity as her mother.

“I’m sorry! I’m trying to get these gifts to Effie before she leaves and-” Once they’ve picked up enough boxes, they leave without another word. “Crap again.

I sigh as I pick myself up and walk back into Effie’s room. She’s in the bathroom so I try to quickly pick out the right gifts for her. “Okay, it’s definitely this rectangular one…and this small box…I think this must be the book I got her…so that’s all five…or was it four?”

As I contemplate my counting, Effie zooms into the room. She squeals as she picks up the small stack of presents in front of me. “Oh yay! Thank you baby! I can’t wait to open these!” Within a few seconds, she kissed me once more and shot out of the room with her bags and gifts in tow. As I head back to my room with the remaining boxes, I think to myself that I just need to survive a few days without her.

What could possibly go wrong?” I think to myself as I watch her drive away through my bedroom window.

Yup. Just keep jinxing yourself.” I find myself floored by the fact that not only did I wake up later than expected, but there is several feet of snow outside. Normally, this wouldn’t be an issue but as I walk downstairs I can sense the problems start to pick up.

Emma comes in from outside as I walk down the stairs, bundled up and placing a shovel by the door. “I know you’re a guest but it would’ve been nice to get help shoveling the driveway ugh.”

“Sorry!”

I walk into the kitchen and find everyone else has already eaten. Eve takes offense to this as she prepared a wonderful spread of French toast with scrumptious fruit for everyone but mine is now cold. “Hmph. It takes much better warm but I guess you’d have to wake up on time for that.”

“Sorry!”

As I try and make a show of how delicious I find her cooking to be, Eve ceases to be as annoyed with me. Evidently it’s enough to appease her as she serves me a cup of fresh coffee and oatmeal to round out the breakfast. Unfortunately, in my act of overly enjoying myself for her sake, I spill some of the soft oatmeal on myself.

Tsk. Young lad- man. If you can’t feed yourself properly, I’m afraid you’ll have to wear a bib.” Mother chooses that moment to walk into the kitchen, presumably to refresh her coffee. She saunters over to me, takes my spoon from my hand, and wipes my face for me. I find myself blushing for several reasons, partly due to the fact that her robe looks incredible on her. In my moment of surprise, she scoops up some of my oatmeal and… “Say ahh.”

I’m so taken aback that I open my mouth not in compliance but out of shock. She places the oatmeal in my mouth and I swallow. She does it again…and I comply. I’m so embarrassed yet…every time she gives me a command I can’t help but follow through on it. Eve giggles in the background as Mother feeds the entire bowl to me.

“Good gir-boy. Now, go wash up. You’re to help me clean up a bit before the big day tomorrow.” I nod obediently, my face obviously quite warm.

“Don’t forget your dishes!” Eve calls out through gritted teeth. I turn around and apologize once more. This pretty much sums up the rest of the day.

I go upstairs, carry my suitcase to the bathroom so I can locate my toiletries and clothes after a shower. Of course, I don’t know how their fancy bathroom works and somehow end up getting the entirety of my suitcase soaking wet. So after I wash up and change my clothes into the only dry outfit remaining, I report to Mother.

After explaining what happened, she only laughs and shakes her head. She gives me instructions and I feel like I’m doing quite well. Until I get distracted once more and knock over a few things. She tells me that it’s okay, that’s why she relies on a maid anyway. “Although, if you’re this bad at cleaning, I should have you take over her duties until you improve. It’s a must-have skill young lad- oh, you know what I mean dear.”

She has me bring my clothes to the laundry room so they can be dried. Of course, in doing so I don’t ask how to work their fancy dryer or washer. So, I go to find them, but of course now my presence is being requested for several other chores.

Eve asks me to help her put up decorations, but I get in trouble for not doing it right. Emma walks in as I’m holding a ladder and makes Eve mad by saying I’m looking up her skirt, which of course I wasn’t when I was holding the ladder steady

Then Emma needs help getting stuff out of the room I’m staying in. As we look around the closet, I spot several old bedroom items and toys befitting a young girly girl. She makes a face at me as though daring me to say anything. I avoid the death glares and look around, finding a crib indeed in here but not what she's been searching for. I'm called useless when she finds her objects of interest before me, in her own old closet.

Later, Mother has me help with lunch, which somehow leads to a discussion of how she believes her girls should all learn to cook. Not for their “man” but to be self-sufficient. I agree of course but somehow this ends up with me in a frilly apron while she coaches me on how to bake and cook. Although embarrassing, we actually end up having quite a nice time! I could do without Mother and Eve commenting on my posture and how it wouldn't do well in heels and a dress, but I just try and have fun with it. They're obviously used to a certain way of being raised in an all-girls home...with the short-lived rich husband/stepdad...

At the end of the night, I’m video chatting with Effie about how the rest of the day went. “And then I finally remembered my clothes but by the time I did, other laundry loads were being done by everyone else. Eve and Mother called me irresponsible while Emma tried to claim I was probably trying to peep their clothes. Ugh.”

Effie is cackling on her side of the phone. She had a rough day but apparently everything was going well with work. “So is that why you’ve got on Eve’s adorable old jammies on? It's always hard to tell whether they belong on an old lady or a young girl living on the prairie.”

I mumble something in response as my face burns bright red. I indeed have on Eve’s sleepwear from when she was less ‘posh’ and more ‘prim and proper’ according to Emma. Although embarrassing, I have to admit that the cotton pajamas are quite comfortable, albeit short due to our differences in height. At least my small feet fit into her fuzzy slippers, which were wonderfully soft!

“Yeah, well Emma wasn’t going to offer a ‘pervert’ anything besides a paddling and your mom’s clothes are a bit…”

“Old-fashioned? You have to admit they look good on her thought! It’s how she nabbed five stepdads for us…or was it four?” I laugh, although I don’t want to admit that the thought of wearing one of Mother’s nightgowns was actually more enticing than repulsive…just thinking about the silk and the fact that her- I shake my head.

“Come back soon! Please! I feel like I’m making such a bad impression on everyone…”

“It’s okay! I bet they love you! Mom has already texted me saying she likes you! Honestly! She likes that you’re trying plus you said you’d let her cut your hair?!” I’m taken aback at this news.

“O-oh really?! Wow! I mean, I didn’t think she was serious but hey, if I can get on her good side she can do whatever she wants to me!”

Hey! That’s my Mother you’re talking about, I can do whatever I want to you first! I’ll dig my way back through this snowstorm if I have to!” We both laugh and talk some more before we eventually kiss over the phone and hang up.

Hearing that Mother might actually like me gives me hope that maybe tomorrow won’t be so bad. I feel like I can sleep soundly tonight. After all, I have presents to look forward to!
