Beth had no idea where she was...had no idea how she'd gotten here...had no idea who might have taken her. All she remembered was driving down a dark country road late at night when a bright flash of light filled her windscreen and she passed out. When she came to, she was in a small metal cell, naked apart from the strange metal restraints locked around her neck, and mouth and over her arms.
A minute later, the cell door had opened, automatically, to reveal a long corridor stretching out ahead of her. At the same time, a glowing blue line appeared on the floor beneath her feet. She also began to feel something inside the collar, at first an annoying prickling that soon grew to be quite painful.
When Beth took a few, hesitant steps out of the cell, following the line, the sensation ceased. When she stopped, looking around for someone, something to explain where she was, what she was doing here, the sensation came back, again starting out merely annoying and slowly working up to genuine pain. Walking forward again stopped the pain. It didn't take Beth long to figure out that as long as she kept walking forward, following the glowing blue line in front of her, the collar wouldn't punish her, but if she stopped, or even slowed down, or tried to step too far to one side or another, the prickling returned, warning her get back on the line and hurry.
The line wound its way through the maze like corridors, turning this way and that, seemingly at random. Beth's mind boggled at the scale of the place she found herself in. She'd already walked fifteen minutes and still she passed intersections with corridors stretching out past where she could see...though she wasn't allowed to look for very long.
At that point, her line turned and met up with another line on the floor, this one glowing a bright red. Moving over to it triggered the warning, that line wasn't for her. A few minutes later, she saw the one it was: another young woman, naked, like her, save for the metal restraints. Her head was bowed down, eyes fixed on the line she was following. As they got closer, Beth tried to get the other girl's attention, but the gag over her lips made any sort of speech impossible. The other girl returned her grunts with a muffled moan of her own. At any rate, they soon passed each other, the collars not allowing them time to try and work out some sort of communication.
Pretty soon, Beth's line led her around a corner and out of sight of the other girl. But another line, this one a bright green, told Beth there were still more captives like her in this strange place. On the other hand, Beth had yet to see their captors, hear anything from them, any signal beyond the simple punishments the collar dealt out. Her terrified mind worked it over, frantically, as she walked. Had she been abducted by aliens? The CIA? And for what? The endless corridors put her in mind of rats running a maze. Was this some sick, twisted experiment? Would she be kept running it, hours, days, maybe even weeks, until she couldn't take another step? Or was there some destination, at the end of the line, awaiting her? Beth had no way of knowing. For now, all she could do was follow it...
