Statuary Garden:

It seems rather odd that a slave fair would also bear host to a seller of fine marble statuary. But when you see the subject matter the artist, Mistress Ophidia sculpts, you can understand why she should choose to set up her workshop here, surrounding by inspiration. And indeed, the quality of her work is astounding, all the figures rendered in such lifelike detail and the speed with which she works! I myself have once seen a brand new statue for sale in her open air garden that was the spitting image of a lovely young slave girl I swear I saw being displayed at auction just that morning! Indeed, some have told me that if one wants a particular sort of statue, they need merely find a suitable girl among the countless slaves for sale at Three Crowns and bring her to the statuary garden to pose for the artist and may come and pick up their fine new statue the next morning. Simply incredible!

Some notes on Gorgons and Petrification:

Contrary to popular belief, the victims of a Gorgon’s petrification are not dead, merely transformed to stone. The process can, eventually be reversed, returning the individual to the state they were in when first petrified. While this can be done with powerful magical spells, the more common way is by slaying the Gorgon who caused the petrification effect. The magic sustaining the petrifaction is tied in with the life force of the Gorgon, once that is cut off slowly, sometimes within minutes, sometimes after days or weeks, the spell will wear off and the victim restored. Of course, Gorgons are notoriously difficult to slay and can live for centuries, maybe forever if not killed, so this does not happen too often. A petrified individual can be distinguished from an ordinary statue both by the starling detail in which is it rendered, but also by the great hardness and durability of the stone, making them all but impossible to break by mundane means.

Whether or not the victims of petrification are aware of their state while petrified is the subject of some debate, particularly as so few have been unpetrified and can thus be asked. Most report having no awareness of being petrified or even of any time having passed. In some reports, upon returning to life, the individual picked up a sentence exactly where she’d left off, some decades before when interrupted by the Gorgon that had petrified her. Others report spending the years in a dream like state, or of being aware of their surroundings, but only dimly, time passing strange, sometimes passing normally, other times years passing in the blink of an eye, though whether this was true awareness or merely another dream-state in difficult to determine.
