“You know, it really hurt me, your betrayal…” Davis said, his tone even, his voice low.
Betty said nothing, not that she could say much. The wad of cloth stuffed into her mouth made sure of that. Another band of cloth, tied tight over her lips kept the makeshift muzzle in.
“But I found I couldn’t keep living in the past, putting myself through that pain again and again…” He continued. He set a hand on Betty’s shoulder, almost gently.
Betty tried to lean back, but thought better of it. Already, her heels were on the edge of the bridge. The only thing behind her was empty space. She swayed, struggling to keep her balance. As she did, the chains around her ankles rattled, loud in the still night air. The other end of the chain was anchored securely to a concrete block.
“Luckily, I’ve found a way I think I can move past this…”
She gave a frantic whimper, wanting to say something…anything. Below, in the darkness, the fast flowing water churned and splashed as it hit the stone arches.
“Don’t worry. After tonight, I won’t be mad at you any longer.” Davis grinned. “It’s all water under the bridge now…”
