"What's the fuss all about? It's merely an old apple," Tom remarked to his friend Steve, peering through the fence at the solitary tree nestled in the witch's garden. The fruit appeared plump and inviting, a vivid contrast to the lifeless, shriveled apples drooping from the branches of his own orchard.

"Come on, Tom, you should know better," Steve said, his voice tinged with anxiety as he scanned the surroundings. "This is her land. You don’t mess with a witch’s belongings."

But Tom was already climbing up, a spark of mischief dancing in his eyes. "It's just one apple. She won't even notice."

With a determined grunt, he vaulted over the fence, landing softly on the lush grass. The witch's house loomed ominously in the background, its crooked windows appearing to scrutinize his every move. He tried to shake off the chill creeping down his spine as he approached the tree, the apples shimmering in the golden afternoon light. Reaching up, he grasped the ripest one, and with a swift twist, it was his.

"Well, well, what do we have here?"

The unexpected voice startled Tom, causing him to jump and spin around, the apple slipping from his fingers. There she stood, the witch herself, her eyes slitted and her mouth a thin line. An undeniable aura of power surrounded her, making the very air hum with tension.

Tom's heart raced as he took in her ragged cloak and the warts dotting her face. "I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any trouble," he stuttered, retreating a few steps.

The witch's piercing gaze locked onto him. "Didn’t mean to cause trouble, did you?" she echoed, her voice dripping with menace. "But you’ve taken from me, and for that, you will pay dearly."

A peculiar tingling sensation coursed through Tom's fingers, and before he could react, they began to shrink and sprout coarse hair. He gasped in horror as his body transformed, his legs thickening and bending until he found himself on all fours, his voice now a braying donkey's cry.

"You’re cursed," the witch declared, her eyes sparkling with wicked delight. "Cursed to be a foolish little jackass. Now, scamper off, my little donkey, and ponder your decisions."

With a dismissive wave, she sent him away, and Tom stumbled out of the garden, his new donkey ears flapping in the wind. Steve's eyes widened in disbelief, his mouth moving soundlessly as Tom, now fully transformed, awkwardly made his way toward him.

"It's alright," Tom managed to utter, his voice barely a whisper, rough and strained. "It's still me. Please, Steve, help me."

But as those words escaped his lips, the change surged through him completely, and all that emerged was a loud, unmistakable "Hee-haw!" In a panic, Steve bolted away, leaving Tom behind, his heart heavy with the weight of the reality he now faced.

The witch's sinister laughter echoed ominously as Tom, now a donkey, ambled away from the garden, uncertain of what lay ahead. Each step was a new experience, the ground feeling foreign beneath his hooves, his body moving in ways he had never imagined. He could only wish for a way to lift the curse before he was tempted to lie again—or before anyone else uncovered his secret.

Days morphed into weeks as Tom struggled with his transformed existence. He steered clear of his village, dreading the scorn and fear that would surely follow his revelation. Instead, he sought solace in the nearby woods, surviving on meager berries and grass. His mind often wandered to Steve, wondering if his friend had confided in anyone about that fateful day. He hoped Steve was guarding his secret well.

One night, bathed in moonlight, Tom stumbled upon a troupe of traveling performers setting up their camp. They exuded an enchanting aura, reminiscent of the witch's garden. Perhaps they held the key to his salvation, he mused. With cautious steps, he approached the flickering fire, his ears perked with anticipation.

"Well, well, what do we have here?" boomed a burly man with a bushy beard and a mischievous glint in his eye. "A wild donkey! We might just have a spot for you in our show."

Tom's heart raced at the sound of human voices. He sensed an opportunity and nodded eagerly, hoping they would grasp his intent. The performers mistook his excitement for docility and soon adorned him with a vibrant blanket and a jaunty hat. They taught him a few basic tricks, and before long, he found himself part of their show, entertaining the throngs that gathered in the town squares.

Yet, the thrill of the applause was tinged with sorrow. With each "Hee-haw," Tom felt the heavy burden of his enchantment. He understood that he couldn't remain a donkey forever; he needed to discover a way to reclaim his humanity. Thus, he began to listen closely to the murmurs of the performers around the flickering campfire, searching for a hint to shatter the witch's curse.

One night, as the troupe was packing up, Steve emerged at the edge of the clearing, his eyes wide with fear. Tom recognized his friend instantly, despite the transformation. "Steve?" he attempted to call, but only a donkey's bray escaped his lips. Steve recoiled, shock and terror etched on his face.

The witch had found him.

Tom watched as Steve stumbled through a lie, attempting to justify his presence. The familiar tingling began at Steve's fingertips, just as it had for Tom, and in an instant, his friend was caught in his own metamorphosis. The burly man stared in disbelief as a second donkey joined their ranks.

Now, Tom had a companion in his plight, igniting a flicker of hope. Perhaps together, they could unravel the witch's spell. The two donkeys exchanged a knowing glance, a silent agreement forged between them.

The performers, ever the opportunists, quickly integrated Steve into their routine, creating a duo that attracted even larger audiences. As they journeyed from town to town, Tom and Steve utilized their human intellect to communicate in a manner only donkeys could understand. They plotted and strategized, seeking answers in every town they visited and every person they encountered.

Each day unfolded with the pulse of the highway and the joyous cheers of the crowd, while the nights were reserved for intimate talks, where they unveiled their dreams and anxieties. Through the trials they encountered together, their connection deepened, solidifying a partnership that could withstand any challenge. They understood that with one another by their side, they could brave any storm.
